“On this day, 94 years ago, women in the United States had their right to vote cemented into law through the certification of the 19th amendment. We celebrate Women’s Equality Day every August 26 to commemorate the monumental undertakings of the suffragists who came before us, the initiative of those who represent us across the nation now and the promising future of the women leaders who are still waiting in the wings. This is an historic year for women in the political world, but underrepresentation is still a hurdle facing every decision making body in the country – including right here in our own City. That’s why the Council is proud to have launched the nation’s first Young Women’s Initiative to combat systemic gender-based inequality and to expand education, healthcare and economic opportunities to women across the five boroughs. This City Council is committed to supporting young women and our recommendations, alongside our on-going legislative efforts to make our City more fair and just for all, ensure that the future has never looked brighter for women in New York.”
